Hubert Howe Bancroft (May 5, 1832 A.D – March 2,1918 A.D), American historian, born in Granville, Ohio, and educated there in the public schools. In 1856 A.D he settled in San Francisco and in 1858 A.D established a bookselling and publishing concern there.
Hubert Howe Bancroft (1832 A.D-1918 A.D) gathered a large collection of historical material, which amounted to 60,000 volumes and many manuscripts when he presented it to the University of California in 1905 A.D.
From this material, dealing mainly with the history and ethnography of western America, Bancroft directed the preparation of a pioneering West American Historical series ( 1875 A.D -1890 A.D). Hubert Howe Bancroft employed a group of assistants, and himself wrote less than a dozen volumes. The work includes The Native Races of the Pacific States of North America ( 1875 A.D-1876 A.D) and six volumes of essays on California history.
